Bonnie grew up in Oklahoma City, OK. Her first memories of dancing involved going with her family to the Yukon Czech Hall to dance Polka around 8 years old. Her dad also bought instructional ballroom dance videos and they danced on the carpet in the living room.
Bonnie started West Coast Swing dancing at 14, not knowing what she was getting herself into. Prior to that, she did a little gymnastics and some Bellydance, which gave her a unique foundation for West Coast Swing. She also took piano lessons for 7 years as a child, so she had an ear for music and an understanding of music theory.
Since falling in love with West Coast Swing, Bonnie dabbled in Salsa & other Latin dances, Blues, Lindy, Balboa, Hip Hop, and Modern, as well as trying to follow anything anyone tried to throw at her.
She started teaching WCS by herself in 2008, and began partnering with Jerome in 2012.
Bonnie's versatility, musicality and strength make her a formidable dancer, while her patience, understanding and experience make her an excellent teacher.
Bonnie is also a licensed massage therapist, and her understanding of the body helps inform her teaching.

Jerome grew up in Nîmes, near Montpellier in the south of France. Jerome's journey in dance began when he was 3 years old, when he took two years of ballet. He watched his older brother dance ballet at a high level for many years, so he always had a foot in the dance world.
He started teaching himself Hip Hop as a teenager. Around the same time, he started taking karate lessons, later earning a 2nd degree black belt and teaching and running his own dojo. At age 19, he was working as a personal trainer at a gym that also had a dance studio, which is where he started his first partner dance, Rock'n'Roll, then Boogie and Lindy Hop, before finding West Coast Swing at age 28.
Jerome took a WCS teacher training course in France. He then spent one year in Montréal to continue to educate himself with professional American dancers and compete at events. By the end of that year, he had progressed from Novice to Allstar rank and completed two PDIA teaching certificates.
Jerome will tell you he's not a 'natural' at anything, he has always had to work hard for what he wants. This has given him analytical skills and a better understanding of WCS dance, as well as a drive to go after what he wants and keep learning.
Bonnie and Jerome met at Liberty Swing Dance Championships in 2012 and hit it off. He moved to the USA to be with her and they got married shortly thereafter. They taught local WCS classes in the Philadelphia, PA area where Bonnie was living at the time.
They bought an RV and began traveling full-time in 2014. Thanks to the generosity and support of their friends in the dance community, they explored the U.S., Canada, and occasionally Europe while competing and teaching WCS.
Jerome's technique and discipline complements Bonnie's artistry, versatility, and perceptiveness to form a remarkable partnership.
They are currently performing their 6th routine together, and working on a 7th. They perform in the Showcase division.
They gained the nickname "The Flying Subeys" from some friends who watched Bonnie & Jerome doing acro yoga.
They respect their history, where the dance came from, and have a vision for where it can continue to go.
They love having fun and being a part of this amazing community.
Bonnie and Jerome wanted to create more stability in their lives and help build a local community. They decided to leave their nomadic lifestyle and move to Atlanta in mid-2018.
They found a unique studio space and started teaching locally. Subey Dance Dojo LLC was formed in 2019.
The idea for the name 'dojo' came about from Jerome's karate background, and the structure of the classes karate uses. Dojo means 'place of the way,' a place where immersive learning occurs. The Subeys want to elevate the standards of instruction for WCS and are constantly looking for ways to improve.
